Position Overview:

The Mechanical Engineer will develop the mechanical systems required for safe and reliable operation of PNL’s neutron generators and ion implanters.  The Mechanical Engineer will also develop systems for manufacturability and serviceability.  This position will be responsible for leading all aspects of design, including requirements gathering, analysis, modeling, verification, BOM management, drafting, and supporting designs through production.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Drive development of engineering design requirements
  • Create 3D CAD models of designs
  • Analyze designs to prove design criteria are met
  • Manage detail drawing creation and release
  • Develops Bills of Materials for complex assemblies
  • Leads designs through the engineering change process
  • Coordinate with vendors to ensure manufacturability of designs
  • Assembly of prototype units
  • Collaborate with test engineers to verify designs



  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or comparable field
  • 10+ years of experience in a design role
  • Experience in a production environment is preferred
  • Experience with SolidWorks is preferred, but other 3D CAD packages will be considered
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis – CFD is required
  • Working knowledge of tolerances and GD&T
  • Coordinate with vendors to ensure manufacturability of designs
